What constitutes great design is a subjective debate and often varies from industry to industry. However, I am often asked - What's your favourite business website? (in other words, what's your favourite website that's trying to sell you a product or service as opposed to a News site such as bbc.co.uk or a Social Networking site like Facebook) Now, by design I mean 'look and feel' - there are of course many other factors that should be taken into account when building a website, not least 'ease of use'. However, the look and feel of a site is something that a user will garner in the first few seconds that they are on it and if they don't like it, they are unlikely to go any further.

Making a great first impression should be a paramount objective of any website. If the user likes the look of you, they are more likely to do business with you. With your competitors just a mouse click away, doing business online can be a fickle task. That being said and without further ado, let me point out a couple of websites that I think are pretty spot on.

These sites both have an understated wow factor to them, in my eyes anyway, and if I needed their services and everything else seemed okay, there's a good chance I would buy from them. That's the power a great first impression can have. I don't want to go into any detail about why I think these designs work in particular but I would be interested to hear what anyone else thinks. And if you have come across any websites that you have been impressed with please leave a link below.

Thanks

The Flash banners and movie coupa.com have is some of the best use of advertising through Flash I've seen in a while... very cool.

The Flash advertising oozes quality doesn't it. Also, what struck me was not just the quality of the site design and use of Flash as you pointed out, but the fact they are selling e-procurement software. It's amazing how a great website can make such a mundane sounding product appear so desirable.
